Hiring staff virtually has become more and more prevalent, especially now that we are in a pandemic. Interviews which traditionally took place face-to-face are now being done virtually to accommodate the need to keep everyone socially distanced, safe and healthy. Companies are using Zoom or Teams (to name a few options) to host virtual interviews which have become the norm.

A few tips to successful virtual interviewing are: 1) have a system (including good headsets and microphones) that works well to avoid any technical glitches, 2) conduct your work in as professional a manner as possible. Your communication to the candidate(s) should be well-written and formatted to inspire confidence in your company, 3) keep your company website, LinkedIn and other on-line profiles up-to-date. Candidates will research your organization. It is one of the first things that they will do.

Conducting video interviews during Covid-19 will allow your recruiting team to stay nimble and keep securing quality talent despite work-from-home and social-distancing protocols. Video interviewing tools can directly integrate with your applicant tracking system to create a more streamlined recruiting process. Virtual interviews will surely evolve going forward due to the rise of AI and virtual reality solutions.

When hiring, the electronic means can also enhance your process. Automated email replies can allow companies to showcase their employer brand, and set the right expectations with job seekers and potential new employees.

Something to think about: Asynchronous video interviewing is very valuable to both the candidate and the hiring team. It saves time from playing phone tag for screening. It reduces hiring bias by standardizing the recruiting process. It allows candidates to interview on their own time. Candidates also can record their video responses to interview questions, leading to less stress to get everything right the first time. The hiring team can better evaluate candidates because they can re-watch answers whenever they want. Overall, there is much more functionality for hiring teams and ease-of-use for candidates.
